Ms Barnes spent her childhood drawing on reams of white shelf paper—even while hospitalized as a nine year old. In time, she climbed trees in her yard and began sketching the landscape.
Patty earned a BFA in Art History from Marymount College, Tarrytown NY. She continued her education earning her Masters from the University of Wisconsin.
In February 2016, Barnes sold her business on the Cape and began to paint daily. The children were launched and doing well. It was time for a change.
Since then Patty’s work has been juried into national shows at the Cape Cod Art Center, the Creative Art Center, and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. She is a member of all three organizations, plus, the Cape Cod Art Association, the Monday Painters Group, and the Yarmouth Art Guild.
Sue Altman recently made Cape Cod her home, though she has long been drawn to the area, having spent years vacationing, teaching, and studying painting here. Her deep connection to Cape Cod is reflected in both her artistic practice and her commitment to the local arts community.
Before relocating, Sue was based in the New York Metro area, where she worked for two decades as a graphic designer in the publishing industry before transitioning to a career as an art and art history educator. She has lectured extensively on art history topics: presenting at libraries, senior centers, art centers, museums, and through Road Scholar. On the Cape she has lectured at many libraries, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM), and the Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMOA), where she also serves as a docent. She continues to deliver lectures to audiences across the country via Zoom.
As a painter, Sue primarily works in oils, focusing on still life while also exploring portraiture, including pet portraits. She is particularly fascinated by the challenge of capturing textures, light, transparency, and reflections. Her still-life compositions often feature imaginative juxtapositions of objects, food studies, and surrealist elements.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and venues across New York and Cape Cod, including the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, PAAM, and the Creative Arts Center in Chatham.
